List of Fruits Reference

Use this complete list of fruits as part of a low fat raw food diet or just when craving sweets. You do not have to adhere to a strict raw vegan diet to enjoy the health advantages of fruit. Simply use proper food combining (eat fruit alone) and eat a low fat diet and you can indulge in as much of this list of fruits as you desire.

Fruit is higher in vitamins and lower in minerals than vegetables. They are also higher in calories and sugar and low in fat, and are encouraged to be the main source of calories in ones diet. If you are a fast oxidizer you may need more fat and less sweet fruit.

Fruit for protein?

Raw food protein is always an issue for people to wrap their minds around but most are surprised that fruit offers sufficient protein and is in a much more bioavailable form than its cooked opposition. Half a watermelon has nearly 14 grams of protein and your body can use all of it unlike the protein in a slab of heated meat that the body must break down and rearrange.

List of fruits that are sweet:

Banana, Plantain, Persimmon, Date, Dried Fruit, Fig, Sapote

If you are an athlete or trying to consume more calories, you should seek out the fruits on this list. Bananas in particular are calorically dense and packed with nutrients. If you blend up ten of them into a smoothie you have about a 1000 calorie meal. However, if you are diabetic or have impaired glucose tolerance you will want to work your way up to consuming this much fruit by eating low fat for a few weeks.

It may feel like a fruitarian diet eating this much fruit but do not let the label scare you. Although the name implies it, a fruitarian diet does not include exclusively fruit and you will be obtaining more nutrients than a mainstream diet could ever offer you.

List of fruits that are melons:

Watermelon, Honeydew, Cantaloupe

This list of fruits are the most popular melons although there are other varieties. They should always be eaten alone because they digest very quickly and will ferment if taken in with other fruits or food.

Melons are very high in water content which makes them easy to digest and will help you to take in a high amount of calories with no discomfort. If you are craving sweets, melons and sweet fruits will satisfy you. I will sometimes eat an entire watermelon in one sitting after a long workout. They are also one of those most alkalizing foods you can eat.

List of fruits that are acid:

Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Pineapple, Blueberry, Strawberry, Tangelo, Tangerine, Pomegranate, Passion Fruit, Tomato

This list of fruits is good for those just starting a raw food diet because they are lower sugar. Once your body is cleaner and you are eating less fat you can graduate to sweeter fruits.

List of fruits that are sub acid:

Apple, Kiwi, Cherry, Grape, Blackberry, Raspberry, Pear, Plum, Mango, Kumquat, Papaya, Peach, Prune, Nectarine, Apricot, Guava, Mulberry

The sub acid fruits include many peoples favorites. Make yourself a big fruit salad with these and enjoy as much you you would like.

List of fruits that are fatty:

Avocado, Coconut, Durian, Olive

These fruits are very high in fat but are of the healthiest kind. However, you will want to enjoy these foods in moderation if you are consuming a lot of fruit or you will end up with insulin problems. A low fat raw food diet usually works best for most people and you can learn more from Dr. Grahams book The 80/10/10 Diet.

If you are a slow oxidizer you should shoot for 10% fat in your diet or less. If you are eating a 2000 calorie diet this works out to be about 22 grams of fat and this adds up quicker than you might think. One avocado has about 25 grams of fat and one olive has 1 gram of fat so you can see how fat grams can sneak up on you. I typically limit myself to half or a third of an avocado and a few unsalted raw olives.

If you are a fast oxidizer you can aim for a higher percentage of 20% but be careful not to consume too much high sugar fruit.

The durian is a spiky, wild looking fruit that you can find frozen at some asian markets. Some raw foodists consider this creamy fruit a special treat, but it is usually a love it or hate it kind of thing. Beware of the smell, although it does not offend me. :)

List of fruits that are non-sweet:

Cucumber, Eggplant, Squash, Tomato (also an acid fruit), Bell Peppers

Although the culinary definition of fruit excludes these foods, botany declares them a fruit because of their seeds. They are low in sugar and fat and are great to add to salads or just to eat alone as part of a low fat raw food diet.
