Detox Recipes

These are my favorite detox recipes to make for a raw food detox diet. There is a mix of raw and cooked foods in many of these recipes so that detoxification is not too severe. However, the breakfast recipes should always be raw in order to assist the body in continuing to detoxify after a long night of fasting during sleep.

If you can, you should try and eat all raw food until dinner during a detox cleanse . For an evening meal, good detox recipes are steamed, baked, or stir fried vegetables in coconut oil or ghee, with a salad. If you would like a meat based meal, good picks are seared or baked wild caught salmon, organic free range eggs, chicken, or turkey.

What qualifies as a detox recipe?

Your goal during a detox cleanse is to eat raw until dinner or at least lunch, eat organic foods (especially in the case of meat), practice proper food combining (no starches with protein, eat fruit alone, etc.), eat only easy to digest grains (sprouted grains, quinoa, kamut, or millet), and avoid salt and heated oils that easily go rancid (use coconut oil or ghee instead). If your detox recipes meet all these standards as well as including a portion of raw food as well, then you are good to go.

My own experience

When I first started a raw food diet, my favorite detox recipes were the simple ones. I found (and still find sometimes) that the longer I spent in the kitchen cooking, the better the chance my cravings for unhealthy food would surface and get the best of me. Let your goals for your new way of eating be about breaking old habits and making new and better ones. Find a way to make the raw foods the tastiest item on your plate and the cooked ones won't seem so enticing anymore.

When I was still experiencing raw food detox, my detox recipes were usually always raw during the day with a mixture of raw and cooked at night. I found I was naturally not hungry until about noon, at which time I would have some fresh orange juice or a fruit smoothie. For lunch I always had a big salad of mixed greens, carrots, onions, dates, tomato, avocado, cashews and anything else that seemed good at the moment. Dinner was typically another large salad with a little variation like raw goat cheese and a side of steamed veggies or a baked sweet potato with avocado "butter" and honey.

For some people that seems like a whole lot of salads, but that is just what I enjoyed. You can most certainly choose from other detox recipes and still get your greens in from drinking a green smoothie.

One thing to keep in mind is that you will either be eating a high fat diet or a high fruit diet to get enough calories in (on a conventional diet people eat either high fat or high carb). In my case, I could not tolerate much fruit in the beginning while my body was detoxing, so I had to eat a diet high in fat. This is not healthy, but as it was for me, it may be a necessary phase for some people. Admittedly, I now feel much better on a low fat diet, but for the first month or two during my detox cleanse, eating a diet high in fruit was not an option. However, you should listen to your own body and do what makes you feel good, as everybody is different. Enjoy these detox recipes and prepare to experience the amazing benefits of a raw food diet.
